چکیده

conclusions: this study provides detailed information and case samples of radiodine contamination artifacts and non-physiological, non-metastatic extra-thyroidal i-131 accumulation in whole-body i-131 imaging. introduction: radioactive iodine has been used for more than 50 years for the treatment of thyroid diseases. differentiated thyroid cancers have the ability to trap iodine. therefore, radioiodine can be used both diagnostically and therapeutically. in the follow-up of patients, it is critical to interpret radioiodine scans correctly. case presentation: non-physiological iodine-131 (i-131) extra-thyroidal uptake detected on post-therapy or diagnostic i-131 scanning are not always interpreted as functioning metastatic thyroid cancer.

Unusual patterns of I-131 contamination.

Whole body imaging with radioiodine can detect functioning metastases, which can often be effectively treated with appropriate amounts of radioiodine. Non-physiologic I-131 uptake detected on images is usually interpreted as suggesting functioning thyroid metastases. However, extra-thyroidal I-131 accumulation does not always imply thyroid cancer metastases and has been reported on many occasio...

Radioiodine Accumulation in a Giant Ovarian Cystadenofibroma Detected Incidentally by 131-I Whole Body Scans

Ovarian cystadenofibroma is a relatively rare tumor; it is usually asymptomatic and is found incidentally. We present the case of a 24-year-old female patient, who had undergone total thyroidectomy for thyroid papillary carcinoma, with an asymptomatic giant cystadenofibroma, incidentally discovered by diagnostic (131)I-SPECT/CT WBSs. We summarize the clinical history, imaging data, and histopat...

Comparison and evaluation of value of thymoglobulin level in serum and I-131 whole body scan (I-131 WBS) in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma [Persian]

This study was done in research institute of nuclear medicine from 1988-1992 for evaluation of the value of serum thyroglobulin level in comparison with 1-131 whole body scan (1-131 WBS) in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma. 204 patients who had total or near total thyroidectomy treated with 1-131 were evaluated in this study. Out of 204 patients 136 di...

Radioiodine avid adenomatous colon polyp in a post-treatment whole body radioiodine scan

A 47 year old female with papillary thyroid carcinoma was referred to our department for post-treatment whole body iodine scanning. The acquired images revealed a focal zone of intense radiotracer uptake in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. SPECT/CT fused slices showed a focal zone of the radioiodine (131I) uptake in the right colon wall. Colonoscopy revealed a pedunculated po...

Unusual false-positive results of whole-body 131I scintigraphy: Four different case scenarios

Post-treatment or diagnostic whole-body radioiodine scintigraphy is widely used to assess the residual, recurrence, or metastases of differentiated thyroid carcinoma because of the high sensitivity and accuracy that this assessment provides. While bearing in mind all the diagnostic potential of this test, we have to consider its’ potential pitfalls, as well. Herein, we present 4 patients with d...
